We are still watching the weather closely, there have been so many grey days in January if there is any sign of sun in the forecast we go out for a while. I know you can go out on the grey days but for photography I hope for a little better light especially in the winter when you need the best light possible for images.
So on Thursday 20th January we decided to head for RSPB Radipole, Weymouth the weather forecast was for sun and cloud which was what we hoped for. One of my main reasons for going there was the hope of seeing Bearded Tits, although I was a little pessimistic as as we hadn’t seen them since 2017, either at Radipole or the Somerset Levels. But as always we thought if we didn’t see them there would be other wildlife to watch.
We were just walking along the path looking and I was looking at a reed which looked like a bird when suddenly a few Bearded Tits flew in and they stayed for a while feeding off the seeds on the top of the reeds. There were probably seven or eight of them but they were so busy it was hard to count them, the male birds showed well the females seemed to be harder to see clearly. The gentle breeze on the reeds was like a force 9 gale as the reeds moved up and down, so I had to catch the moment!
We were on our own enjoying watching and photographing them until a papparazi of photographers appeared from no where, lots of big lenses! we moved on and walked round the circular path but I couldn’t resist another look and Tits were still there, after a short while they suddenly went but what a lovely experience.
I took plenty of photos so apologies, but they are special little birds.
It was relatively quiet at Radipole so we decided to visit Lodmoor for a short while before we made our way home…coming soon

Brings back memories! I saw my very first Bearded Tits at Radipole about 50 years ago when we had a school camping trip based in Chideock, near the wonderful Golden Cap, where I saw my first Marbled Whites. This was about half a century ago!
Have been a few times since & a delightful urban reserve. These days Bearded Tits are more widespread but always a delight to see. Regular now around London at Rainham RSPB Reserve, but can still be elusive.
Lovely shots!
Some good memories! I’ve only discovered Bearded Tits in recent times so it’s been great seeing these lovely birds. It always seems strange at Radipole traffic either side and in sight of McDonalds etc. and all the wonderful wildlife there. So pleased this birds are making a comeback.
