Netmead walk

It’s been very quiet of late the weather hasn’t been good and what birds there are have been keeping a low profile and there has not been too much to inspire me with my photography! But this particular morning things changed. So on Wednesday 9th March I went one of my usual walks  down the lane close to home and into the flood meadows of the Stour and spotted two Canada Geese by the flooded area  also the Little Egret was grubbing around in the wet field, he isn’t quite so skittish now and didn’t fly as we walked past him.

In the same field I spotted seven Roe deer against the fence at Netmead they headed for Millham island although a couple split off towards the bridge and scared the Egret into flight. I got an image of one of the Bucks I notice he is loosing his velvet on his antlers now and they are all looking a little scruffy where they are loosing their winter coat. As we walked towards him he decided to take off as well into Millham island after he’d checked us out.

There was a Buzzard flying in the distance and calling and Gulls flying over quite high off to some fields to feed for the day perhaps

Tilly and I carried on into Netmead field and there was a couple of small flocks of birds flying, one flock was various finches and the other was Linnets which I identified once I got home and saw the image on my computer. It was relatively quiet although there were a couple of Reed Buntings high in the trees.

I got to the edge of the river and I spotted two Swans nearly hidden by the reeds, no chance of a photograph until they both decided to take off heading towards me, a lovely sight.

Heading back up Netmead lane and looking through the hedgerow I spotted another group of Roe Deer, there were five of them I must have disturbed them as they disappeared into the next field, I certainly didn’t expect to see more of them that morning. Apparently Roe deer are not herding animals they tend to go round in groups or are solitary but this time of year they seem to gather into larger groups for whatever reason.

As we headed home there were a number of bird sightings on the way, The odd Fiedfare, Greater Spotted Woodpeckers tapping away, Wrens, Goldfinches, a small flock in the back of the houses near the Apple trees, Robins, it was great to see a pair of Nuthatches near home and the highlight was the Long Tailed Tit carrying a feather, already nest building. And a Wood Pigeon for luck!

  1. Lovely Marilyn! Particularly like the wren singing it’s heart out. And the sharpness of the nuthatch….
