The middle of October and it was a bright sunny day, so Rod and I took a short ride up to Win Green, a lovely viewpoint to see the landscape all around, down to the coast, towards the Blackmore Vale and across Wiltshire. It was a little chilly with a cold wind blowing.
I just did a short walk around the clump of Beech trees to see what was about and I soon spotted some Red Kites, probably around two or three in the distance, as always lovely to watch and in time a couple came a little closer. I could see one Kite with something in his talons, my first thought was food but as he got closer I realised it was sticks and he was busy carrying various ones perhaps back to his nest, I hope he didn’t think spring was on it’s way, perhaps just repairing a current nest for roosting.
There was also Kestrel hovering over the field again at a distance but I love to watch them, I don’t think he had a successful hunt and eventually disappeared into the distance.
As I was going back to the car one or two Skylarks rose out of the grass, not making too much sound but great to see. There were a few small birds about Goldfinches, Yellowhammers and maybe Linnets although it was hard to tell as the sun was so strong and they were silhouettes and they soon disappeared in the undergrowth.
A short hour or so but we enjoyed getting out for a little while.
