At Home

Rod and I consider ourselves very lucky to live where we are. Our house looks over Hambledon Hill to the front and towards Okeford Hill and further from the back. We enjoy sitting in our Conservatory most of the year until it get too cold and we can watch the garden birds and wildlife in the field beyond. They have recently ploughed the field and reseeded it with grass so that is bringing in the Buzzards, we particularly see a youngster on the field. Also we appear to have a largish flock of Pied Wagtails, they are also picking over the soil in the field.

Other birds we have so far seen this autumn in and around our garden include:

  • Robins
  • Wrens
  • Blue Tits
  • Great Tits
  • Goldfinches
  • Dunnocks
  • House Sparrows
  • Blackbirds
  • Starlings
  • Long Tailed Tits
  • Sparrowhawk
  • Greater Spotted Woodpecker
  • Pied Wagtails
  • Coal Tits
  • Magpies
  • Collared Doves

Also in the field beyond, Buzzards, a Kestrel and even a Barn Owl flew past the bottom of the garden at dusk, wonderful.I’m sure I’ve missed some but we will continue enjoying and watching them.

Not the best picture below but this Woodpecker came into the garden and started attacking the Hazelnuts. I didn’t want to disturb him so I took the picture through glass. He eventually flew off with one in his beak.

Of course one of the highlights this year have of course be the visits from a number of Hedgehogs throughout the season but suddenly they have gone! The last sighting was on 19th October of one little female, I’m still leaving food out just in case but I think they may have hibernated, I do hope they are all safe.
