What can I say about the weather except much of the same, the rain still comes and the river has been up and down. We are luckier than the Somerset Levels as many houses and farms are still under water. We see Muchelney (The village was recorded as Micelenie in the Domesday book meaning ‘the increasingly great island’) nearly every night on the television, the village has been an island for some weeks now. We have stayed at the next village of Thorney with our caravan for a few years and we know the area well.
The river at home has gone down this morning and is at a good level for winter. The debris around the banks is very visible and it’s going to take a long time to recover. Of course there is more rain forecast for tonight and during the week. Is there no end, it’s quite chilly but not as we expect in the winter.
Still we are moving towards spring and the plants are beginning to flower/grow. We noticed the Wild Garlic just showing itself in the little spinney we walk through. The Pussy willow is starting to flower as are the catkins. I even saw a poor little Celandine flower battered from the floods, there are leaves of Celandines everywhere just waiting for some sun I would think, for them to flower (like we all are!).
I saw ten Egrets and one Heron flying over this morning, they have been quite elusive for a while it seems they have come back because the river is lower. The Woodpeckers are busy, one was tapping in the spinney; I do hope they nest there again this year.
