Thursday 24th April

Sunrise 05.57 Sunset 20.19 BST

It was a clear night until just before dawn when a mist covered the valley. I decided to go up to New Cross and see if I could get any views but it was not to be the mist soon lifted to give a cloudy morning although later in the day it was a lovely sunny day.

It didn’t matter as Kim and I had an interesting walk, the Skylarks were singing on the fields above New Cross and there were three deer grazing in the fields. I could hear a lot of noise from the Heronry and occasionally I spotted one above the trees, they are well hidden in the woods, as I walked down towards Hammoon on the other side of the Heronry I couldn’t hear or see a thing.

I went on to the trailway off the Hammoon road And took a photo of the view across to Hambledon hill where the mist was just clearing if a little dull. As I walked along the path there were lots of birds about, they like the shelter and relative warmth of the old railway line sidings. I saw a pair of Blackcaps and Goldfinches and then I heard a Cuckoo for the first time this year, it was towards Hammoon.

The  May blossom is just starting to come out in hedgerows replacing the fading Blackthorn.
