Whether it’s because I’ve been noticing them more or because there have been more about this year the Dragonflies I’ve seen this summer have been amazing. One of the best places was close to home down Greenway Lane, a lovely sheltered grass lane bordered by hedgerows.
The Dragonflies patrol up and down in their territories hunting, not easy to take image in flight (for me any way!) so I have to be watchful and quick when they land for a photograph. The ones we noticed in numbers were the Brown Hawker Dragonflies, distinctive in flight by the lovely brown golden wings that shimmer in the light. I was waiting for days before I managed to get one landing as I wasn’t sure what they were until I could check at home.
The next one spotted was a smaller Hawker, it was fast, I had to pursue it for some time and over a few days before eventually it landed and a quick snap before it was gone again. I later had it identified in the UK Dragonflies & Damselflies group on Facebook as a female Migrant Hawker.
It seems I seems I have seen mainly Hawker Dragonflies close to home but there were some Common Darters in the little wooded area near the Stour at the bottom of Greenway Lane and it was also hear I saw the White Legged Damselfly a first for me, again identified by the UK Dragonflies and Damselflies Facebook group.
