Village walk

In between the rain on 5th February I went for a walk for short time (why does the time go double quick when you are watching wildlife!) to see what was about. I headed towards Netmead Lane one of the best places close to home for birdlife at the moment. Many of the hedges haven’t been cut and there is plenty of food stuff for the birds.

One of my first sightings were Bullfinches and in pairs, I’m not sure how many but I spotted at least two pairs, they are quite nervous and because the hedges haven’t been cut difficult to get a picture without a branch in the way, I can’t have it all ways I suppose! A female and one male looked as though they were eating buds and another male was enjoying the Ash keys.

A Fieldfare was in the same place as I saw a single one before, although this time there were several with him. I am certainly seeing many more of them this year and Redwings. They often sit in the tops of the trees and suddenly fly, I can’t believe there’s so many as they go!

The Greater Spotted Woodpeckers are certainly making themselves heard at the moment and I just spotted one in the very top of the trees.

Long tailed Tits are about as are Blue and Great Tits. Goldfinches and of course the usual Wrens, Robins, Blackbirds, Chaffinches, Dunnock, Magpies, Starling, Jays and noisy Green woodpeckers plus more that I’m sure I’ve missed.

The Starlings are already checking out the hole in the top of the electric pole at the top of our road, they have nested in there for a couple of years taking over from a pair of Greater Spotted Woodpeckers who first made the hole and nested there one year, there are a few poles around here with holes in them!
