Late March

Sunrise 06:53 Sunset 19:36 BST

The month is nearly over and I haven’t had too much of a chance to write anything about my morning walks and home. Before the month’s end I am trying to catch up a bit as although the weather has been very cold at times, spring is moving on. The clocks have now altered to British Summer time and I am trying to adjust to getting up an hour earlier, I could see the glow of the sun at 6.00am but sunrise was not until 6.55am. March came in like a Lamb and is now going out like a Lion, we are having high winds at the moment and it is not that pleasant to be out particularly under trees. Hoping for some better weather over Easter this coming weekend

There has been plenty of wildlife action, we quite often see birds rummaging with their beaks stuffed with moss, hair or whatever is available for their nests.

The Little Egrets are about again, I saw ten feeding off the meadow by the footbridge over the Stour to Shillingstone. They were a bit nervous, as soon as we walked out of the spinney they were off!

I managed to get a picture of what I thought was eight in flight until I spotted another in the top right in the trees, so I only missed one and got nine. They are probably going to the Heronry near New Cross for nesting, I am often seeing Herons coming or going that way when we are out.

We see the doe and buck Roe deer in the field down the lane, they know we are there but as long as there is the hedge between us they are not too concerned, it gives me a chance to take a picture through the hedge.

I am also seeing a Kestrel in the fields near home, I managed to get a picture of it across the fields but I’ll keep trying for a better one.

We are starting to get a lovely Dawn chorus. I often hear it before I get out of bed, just as it’s beginning to get light. I often see a Song Thrush singing away and we have our resident blackbird and Dunnock in the garden brightening up our day. Of course the Robin’s are joining in they appear everywhere as do the little Wrens.

Everything is beginning to grow, the wild Garlic leaves have sprung up from nowhere, the Pussy Willow is flowering and the Willows are greening up. The hedgerow buds are bursting and the farmer is scarifying and rolling his fields ready for the grass to start growing. It won’t be long before we are listening for the first Cuckoo and trying to spot the first Swallow.
