Early days of June

Early June and I’m still trying to play catch up!

Still plenty to see on our walks and some exciting sitings of wildlife and at last I’ve heard the Cuckoo at Bere Marsh not just once but a couple of times. We have a few birds nesting close to home we have seen two broods of Long tailed tits fledge and we still hear them when we go out for our walks, hopefully quite a few will survive. We also have a Dunnock and Blackbird feeding young in the same bush at the bottom of the garden they seem quite happy to be close to one another. There are plenty of Greater Spotted Woodpeckers flying around, agian close to home they seem to have done well.

One morning we were looking out the window and we spotted a Green Woodpecker on the grass in front of the house, I couldn’t resist trying to take a photograph, so I went into the bedroom upstairs where I had a clear view, of course I didn’t dare try and open it but I managed to get some images of him feeding, probably ants, there are always plenty there.

The Fox close to home is pretty active now, I think it is a female and it crosses the lane and the field close to home regularly.

One of the highlights so far this month has been the Barn Owl, we think they have young and so they are coming out before sunset to hunt in the fields. I am still trying to get a good picture but I do enjoy seeing them. A couple of nights we did see the male and female hunting. We try and keep well hidden so they are not disturbed and they seem to be successful in taking a few Voles while we are watching them.
