Early August

Sunrise 05:34 Sunset 20:55 BST

We are into August now and the weather is getting to be a little like autumn, we have had some very cold mornings close to a frost and other days when we have had uncomfortable winds that make you want to stay indoors. I do hope our summer hasn’t gone just yet.

There has been plenty to see on our walks and the wildlife is shifting away from rearing young, although the young Barn Owls are still in the barn I do hope they manage to survive their first few trips out. The Crows are hanging around so I hope they don’t come out until it’s dark, we haven’t seen much sign of them flying around at dusk or dawn for a while.

The Roe deer with twins is still grazing in the field off the trailway and when we go out in the mornings we look to see if she is in her usual place. I got a couple of pictures of her the other day but not too close http://www.marilynjanephotography.co.uk/diary/mid-july/ but on Saturday I walked up there and they were right near the fence, too close! Kim my Shepherd dog was very good and sat there while I tried to take a picture, they moved a little distance away and I just managed to get one picture before they took of up the field.

The Buzzards are active at the moment and there are some youngsters about they are enjoying flying in the thermals and making that distinctive meewing noise. I counted at least 40 Longtailed tits crossing from a hedge into the spinney this morning it was a lovely sight.

The Hedgehog is still visiting coming a little later but she races across our patio for the food and a couple of nights ago I looked out and there were two, a much bigger Hog, a male he was trying to attract her by grovelling along the ground it was something I had never experienced before, she wasn’t impressed and carried on eating. We appear to have a good population in our road and most people in the street welcome them so that is good news.
