Saturday April 30th

Still playing catch-up. There was plenty to see at the end of April, the wildlife is very busy building for the nesting season. Some birds like the Blackbirds in our garden have already produced a brood and are on to the next. I had a chance encounter with a Buzzard one morning and managed to get a picture.

The Little Egrets have gathered and are feeding in the wet part of the field by the river, they soon spot anyone walking and they are off. They are nesting at the Heronry at New Cross.

Of course now the Roe deer are very active and I have to keep my eyes peeled as Kim is a chaser and you never know where they are going to be, close to home or farther afield.

Of course all the birds are singing in the morning and we are woken with the Dawn Chorus, usually the Blackbird starts it off before dawn and then everyone joins in! The Wren was sitting in the open and I managed a picture usually they are in the undergrowth and you can hear but not see thm.

Another of my favourite birds is singing above the fields of New Cross I have difficulty in spotting them as they fly higher but I just managed to get a photo of one before it disappeared in the blue sky.

I have also been lucky to see the Barn Owl early in the morning, always pleased to see him. Hopefully the pair will produce some offspring this year again.

At last I heard a Cuckoo before the end of April, only a couple of times one morning and I haven’t been lucky enough to hear him since.
