End of July

I can’t believe that we are through the seventh month. This month has been very dry although much of the hay has only just been cut at the end of this month, much later than usual.

It has been fairly quiet on my walk although the wildlife is around nothing is showing well and the birds are hiding away after their broods have fledged.

I was lucky to see a Fox in the field close to home late one evening. He was quartering the field where there were cows. The Fox didn’t take any notice of them and visa-versa. I think he was aware of us but he knew he could soon disappear if necessary.

I was working in the garden one day when I spotted this huge caterpillar on the lawn about 60mm in length. I dashed in for my iPad to take a picture so I could find out what it was. An ugly creature with a head that retracted into it’s body and two ‘horns’ on it’s rear. After some searching on the internet I found it was a Puss moth and reading the information on it I found it feeds off Willow and Poplar. When I spotted it it was in the late caterpillar stage and was off to form a cocoon for the winter. The moth is much more attractive than the caterpillar!

As always the Roe deer are still about and the buck in my picture has grown some new antlers, they are looking well in their summer coats. I have also seen some does with youngsters when I have been out with Kim walking.
