On the 23rd July we had to go into Blandford to pick up something in the town so we decided a walk along the river in the Stour meadows might be nice. It has been such a long time since we had done this with the lockdown so it made a nice change. The river was fairly low and not much water coming over the weir but the water was really clear and we noticed a number of large Chubb and plenty of smaller specimens and fry, so the river looks pretty healthy.

The resident Little Egret was about moving just a short distance when we were there, he seems to accept all the people and dogs using the meadow.

The highlight for me were the two little Moorhen chicks near the road bridge in the reeds. They look so vulnerable, tiny little balls of fluff. We watched as mum kept bringing food to them and their little tiny wings flapping, trouble is you know there are plenty of predators after them but perhaps they will survive.
