Wednesday 6th August – update!

It was such a lovely evening that I decided to go a little farther on the evening walk. Rod walked a little way with me and then went home with Lucy. Kim and I walked over to Bere Marsh towards New Cross where we spotted a deer in the field, but it soon disappeared. Then as we  were returning down the hill a very large healthy Fox ran alongside the edge of the field ,again disappearing before I could connect my brain with my camera.

I hadn’t expected to see the Barn owl, but what a lovely evening I’ve spent watching him. When I reached the trailway I spotted him in the field by the river and soon he was returning to the barn with food, could the youngsters still be in there?  He spotted me at the last second and flew away. I managed to get a picture, oh I wish it was a front view, although it does show the poor little vole who will soon be supper.

I  continued away from the barn I didn’t want to worry him too much. As I walked across towards home he was backwards and forwards, successfully taking a few voles back to the barn. It was getting towards sunset so it was difficult to get a picture but it was lovely just to watch him hunting. After this morning’s drama it was great to see him hunting without interference.

A couple more pictures below,  it was getting a little darker but it shows how successful he was in the little time I was watching him.

As we eventually crossed over the field towards the spinney and the lane two deer ran across Netmead field. What a day!
