We have had a very cold spell of weather with temperatures well below freezing but nature being what it is is already preparing for the spring. I am noticing differences as I go out on my morning walk with Kim and Lucy. I’m seeing a Song Thrush regularly in the spinney at the bottom of the lane singing in the Oak tree before dawn, a lovely sound. All the birds appear to be singing in the morning while we are out, claiming their territory I suppose.

The Celandines are starting to flower although I think the cold weather is holding them back a little.

The Greater Spotted Woodpeckers are more active and I either hear or see them quite often, we are lucky to have a good sized population around the village and woodland. I love to hear them tapping away at the trees.

They are still doing a lot of work on Bere Marsh Farm, continuing with the hedging and ditching and I was pleased to see them rejuvinationg one of the hedgerows with new hedging plants.

The Buzzard is still active around the Bere Marsh fields and I’m still trying to get a picture of it, it disappears very quickly when we are around.

Getting back to home the Dunnocks are singing on the top of the shrubs in the gardens, they seem to like the twisted hazel to perch on, They have a lovely song and they are such a pretty bird once you get close to them.
