Saturday 21st February

Saturday promised to be a better day, cold with a possibility of wintry showers so we decided to make a trip to the Cranborne Chase to see if we could see the Short Eared Owls. They would soon be returning to Scotland or Scandinavia for the summer to nest. We organised ourselves and armed ourselves with a flask of tea and biscuits as it is a patience job as like all wildlife they are unpredictable and we could be lucky or not.

We got there abut 2.30pm and I set up my tirpod and camera ready for action, I hoped. It was very cold but I had made sure I had lots of layers. Around 3.00pm we spotted our first owl he was well in the distance and then we saw the Crows coming in to harass the owl, they are starting to think about nesting and the owl is considered a threat.

We could see a very black cloud coming from the NW across the Chase it looked like we were in for a downpour. Time to have that warming cup of tea. The shower of sleet last for about twenty minutes and I ventured out again. Before long the owls were out again, there were probably three flying. I took some pictures but I am still struggling to get a really good one, down to my photography I expect. I will keep trying, it is just wonderful to be able to see these wonderful birds. Perhaps I may get another chance to see them before they go this year!
