Tuesday 3rd March

Into March and we are still having cold and wet weather, I suppose it means that spring will come later than last year. But the signs are there all we need is some warmth!

The forecast wasn’t to bad for Tuesday except for a cold wind and may be a shower so we decided to have a trip to RSPB Arne in Poole Harbour. We decided to walk along the beach and then round to the hide looking towards the town of Poole. It was very quiet, a few cars in the park but we only saw four people on our walk.

Our first sighting was the Goose below, there was a number of them on the marsh before Shipstal beach. I wasn’t sure what they were until we came home and I checked up. I believe they are Brent Geese, a winter visitor to the north, east and south coast of the UK.

While we were walking towards the beach we spotted some Sika deer, they were as curious of us as we were of them and they spent some time peeping round trees at us and it gave me an opportunity to take some pictures. There wasn’t many deer about the reserve although there was a large Stag and one hind on the marshes by the hide and as we went home we saw a large herd by the side of the road.

We went into the hide and we saw more birds than we have seen from the hide before. As we settled down to watch a Spoonbill flew in and we spent some time watching him feeding and then he flew off again. There were Wigeon, Shellducks, Mallards, an Egret, Redshanks, Teal, to name a few.

We spent some time enjoying all the birds and all too soon it was time to make our way back to the car. There was still chance to see more wildlife and I managed to see and take a picture of a Treecreeper in the woods.

We had a great morning, as always at Arne.
