Thursday 9th April

At last we are enjoying some settled weather, it is such a change, winter to spring overnight. My friend Judy asked me if I would like to visit the Heronry at Fifehead Magdalen, of course I couldn’t miss a chance! The Heronry is in the Woodland Trust, Fifehead woods and it consists of Broad leaved trees including Oak. We had to walk a little way to get to the Heronry and it’s a good job Judy knew her way as there were a few twist and turns down the woodland paths. We were lucky as the paths had dried out from the winter although a little wet and muddy in places.

The Herons nest up high in the trees in the trickiest places to get at and it is difficult to get a photograph of them either flying in or on the nests. We did manage to capture a couple of Herons nesting and there were maybe three or four there when we were looking. I love to hear them chattering and their prehistoric calls.

We watched them for a little while and then made our way back through the woodland stopping to look at the flowers and listening for the birds, Woodpecker, Blue and Great tits, Goldcrests to name a few. The Bluebells are just beginning to come out and in a short while they will carpet this woodland. The Wood Anemones are all out their delicate blooms moving around in the slightest breeze and of course the Primroses are still in flower and all the greenery is growing very fast now.

We spotted a lone Oxslip on the side of the path, I don’t see them too often.

A lovely morning in this wood and a promise to return when the Bluebells are out.
