Saturday 7th June

Sunrise 04.57 Sunset 21.19 BST

The promise of thunderstorms today never materialised in our part of the world, it was just a damp morning and I did see some lightening towards the channel around 4.00am this morning. By dinner time the sun had come out and we had a warm afternoon.

I was gardening but got distracted by the Swallows, there were lots of fledging birds perching on our garden fence while the parents were swooping around the hay field picking up food for their little ones. I just had to practice taking pictures if them. It was quite tricky as it was very bright and the feathers of the adults reflected the light. The fledglings spent their time in between feeds stretching their wings ready for feeding for themselves.

While I was waiting to take a picture the Blackbirds were bringing food for young, the nest must be in my secret garden, all that singing from the male earlier on appears to have paid off, he still sings but with a beak full of worms!

I also saw two Greater Spotted Woodpeckers on the electric pole making quite a din, there was also Buzzard high in the sky. While I was watching the Swallows a Hawk of some sort was hovering over the field, it was quite large but I didn’t get time to identify it, it may have been a Sparrow Hawk but it looked too big.

The gardening will have to wait until tomorrow!
