Saturday 24th February

Sunrise 07.08 Sunset 17.37 GMT

A dryer day at last but still dull first thing, with sunshine later but it wasn’t to last as the rain came in again.

I managed to get over to Bere Marsh, across the footbridge over the Stour which I enjoyed; although still very wet underfoot in places. I thought on the way back I would look for any signs of an Otter along the banks of the Stour which had gone back in it’s banks leaving some flat muddy areas, just right for an Otter to get onto. I hadn’t seen one since September last year and because of all the wet weather I thought perhaps they had moved elsewhere.

I was peering over the edge of the river and I heard a big splash just below me, I nearly jumped out of my skin. I just saw an Otter disappearing  under the water! Luckily they can’t see very well and they are curious creatures, she came to the surface again and had a look to see what had disturbed her. She looked at me for a short while and I managed to take a picture, although it was quite dull, but something to show Rod when I got home.

There has been a lot of destruction in the last little while with the floods and the very high winds we have been experiencing. But as always nature starts repairing and rebuilding and all the signs are around of the start of another season of nest building and moving on. I noticed the hole in the old Willow near the footbridge and it looks fresh. I must remember to keep an eye on it, possibly a woodpeckers nest?
